Footnote: The Bibighar Well at Cawnpore (now Kanpur) became one of the most tragic symbols of the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Following the siege of Cawnpore, approximately 120 British women and children were killed by rebel forces under Nana Sahib, their bodies cast into a nearby well. News of the massacre provoked widespread horror throughout Britain and profoundly influenced public opinion during the conflict. After the British reoccupied Cawnpore, a memorial and garden were later established at the site, marking it as a place of sombre remembrance and a stark reminder of the brutal realities of colonial warfare.
