An Important Powell & Lealand 1/10 inch N.A. 1.5 Objective

English, c. 1870, signed to the lid of the can ’POWELL & LEALAND, LONDON, 1/10 Apochromatic Oil Immersion, N.A. 1.5’, objective with correction collar and engraved ’POWELL & LEALAND, No14 , 1/10 Apochromatic Oil Immersion, N.A. 1.5’. Note: Van Heurck, in his book ‘The Microscope’ describes this lens as ‘1-10th inch apochromatic, N.A.1.50, is a very remarkable objective, and considerably superior to the previous one (1-8th inch apochromatic). The images which it gives are very beautiful. Unfortunately its price is so large as to make it inaccessible to most workers’, this objective was a staggering £50.00 in 1893.
