Japan Described And Illustrated by the Japanese Mikado Edition VI

Japan Described and Illustrated by the Japanese, (a large folio book, bound in brocade cloth covers with cord ties), written by Eminent Japanese Authorities and Scholars, edited by Captain F.Brinkley of Tokyo Japan, with an Essay on Japanese Art by Kakuzo Okakura, Director of the Imperial Art School at Tokyo Japan. Published by J.B. Millet Company of Boston, Mass. USA 1897.

This being volume VI of the Mikado Edition, numbered 26 of a limited 250 copies. This deluxe edition was made up of 10 volumes.

The volume contains 7 large tinted albumen prints,(203x265mm) and 19 smaller tinted albumens,(89x127mm) showing people and scenes in Japan. Tamamura Kozaburo was commissioned to produce the photographs, a massive and prestigious commission, as approximately 240 000 individual prints were needed to complete the works. Each print being tipped into the volumes. The volume also contains a colour collotype, showing a flower by Kazumasa Ogawa, 2 examples of stencil art printed on silk and a woodblock xylograph reproduction of a painting.

The editor, Capt. Francis Brinkley (1841-1912) was an Anglo-Irish newspaper owner, editor and scholar who loved everything Japanese. He returned to Japan in 1867, after a short previous visit, and remained to live and work with the Japanese military and newspapers of the day.

Note: This lot is offered from a deceased estate. Probate is currently in progress, and title will be confirmed upon issue of the Grant.
This is a standard administrative process following a death. The sale can proceed in the usual way, and there is no impact on the buyer’s ability to take possession.
