Medical, Tobold’s Laryngoscope

German, c.1870-1880, smaller model, with brass plaque 'Laryngoscop nach Dr Tobold', frame in laquered and black oxidised brass, lenses in lacquered brass tube, large mirror on articulated arm, complete except there is a compartment in the case for an additional small hand-held mirror, all fits in domed leather case 13.4cm across.

Note: Adelbert von Tobold (1827-1907), a specialist in laryngeal diseases and a member of the faculty at the University of Berlin, has been described as, “the first physician to directly visualize the larynx.” He introduced two laryngoscopes: a large model in 1862 and a smaller model in 1869.
