An Imperial Four Gallon Working Standard Measure

English, dated 1893, engraved to the front 'IMPERIAL FOUR GALLON, COUNTY BOROUGH OF BURNLEY, 1893, DE GRAVE & CO LONDON', with four calibration verification and Exchequer marks to the edge of the neck, constructed of brass with two large cast handles to each side, large tubular handle to rear, with removable (stuck) pouring spout, in a large oak travel case with steel strapping and green baize lining, with engraved brass plaque to the lid which reads 'COUNTY BOROUGH OF BURNLEY, 1893, DE GRAVE & CO LONDON', measure height 43.5cm.

Footnote: Standard working measures were specially made to be used by the weights and measures department to calibrate any of the inspector's measures that were to be taken out on site. These measures were made to the highest standard and kept at the station.
