mid 19th Century, complete upper and lower plates, upper plate, posts, springs and fittings in gold, teeth in porcelain,the lower plate of gutta-percha, or possibly Vulcanite, makers mark to the gold Note: Gutta-percha is recorded as being used for dentures in the UK in 1847; Vulcanite, developed in the early 1840's, was also adopted for dentures around this time. The design and structure of these dentures is much the same as the Duke of Wellington's sprung false teeth in gold and ivory, on display at Apsley House, but here using porcelain rather than human teeth, and gutta-percha providing greater comfort than carved ivory.
