Apothecary Pewter Theriaca Vessel
Large Pewter Vessel, with loinshead handles, hinged lid with clasp for padlock, profusely engraved with the words 'THERIACA MAGNA ANDROMACHI SENIORIS' copy of an early jar originally from College of Jesuits of Toulouse, makers stan-mps to base, height 45cm
Provenance: private collection originally bought 21 Febuary 2018 from an ebay seller for 414.00 Euros
The inscription "Theriaca Magna Andromachi Seniores." inscription refers to a potent medicinal remedy, theriaca, first formulated by Andromachus of Crete, the personal physician to Emperor Nero. Theriaca, one of the oldest known medicines, was initially designed as a universal antidote against poison but evolved over centuries to treat various ailments.
By the eighteenth century, the composition of theriaca had expanded to include 72 ingredients, such as myrrh, cinnamon, opium, and Spanish wine, along with unusual components like viper's tail. It was employed in treating conditions ranging from severe coughs to contagious diseases and malignant fevers. The vessel exemplifies the rich history of pharmacology and the enduring belief in theriaca’s curative powers during a period when medicine was a blend of science and tradition.
Provenance: from the estate of Wilf Lunn (1942–2023)who was a British inventor, Collector of all things curious and unusual, prop maker, and television presenter, best known for his work on children's TV shows such as Vision On and Jigsaw. Born in Rastrick, West Yorkshire, Lunn was raised by deaf parents and later taught lip-reading. His creative flair for quirky inventions and novelty bicycles earned him a devoted following. Lunn's eccentric persona made him a beloved figure on British TV in the 1960s and 1970s. In addition to his TV career, he authored several books and showcased his inventive spirit through stage shows. He passed away in December 2023.
