French, early 19th Century, octagonal base with two levelling screws, plumb bob and central compass surrounded by wheat-ear engraving, compass without cardinal points, but divided to one degree with central rotating disc to indicate magnetic variation, latitude arc 0-90 degrees, hour ring IIII -XII, I -VIII divided to ten minutes, base 10cm across
