English, c.1880, signed to the instrument and to the lid of the case 'J. F. Bennett, Patentees, Sheffield', constructed similar to a compass but designed to follow the contour of a small adjustable ellipse, with pen and pencil attachment, in leather covered case lined with red silk and velvet
