Label reads Porphyritic Basalt Shackleton Expedition S.Pole Bull Section 1923, the slide would appear to have been mounted in 1923 a year after Shackleton’s death, smaple fromfrom an unknown location and collection.
Porphyritic Basalt is formed when molten rock is cooled underground and then erupted onto the surface. The composition of the Basalt is comprised of crystals of two different sizes. The larger crystals are visible with the naked eye, while the smaller crystals are formed between the larger ones, hence the adjective ‘porphyritic’.
Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922) was knighted and made a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order for his 1907-09 Antarctic Expedition. However, Shackleton is most famous for his 1914-16 British Imperial Antarctic Expedition, which saw their expedition ship Endurance become ensnared in the pack ice. The expedition was imprisoned for 10 months, and only through the incredible feat of Shackleton and his team sailing 800 miles to South Georgia, was the expedition able to be rescued. Not a single man perished.
