Adams, George, Large Drawing Instrument Etui

English, C. 1770, engraved to the parallel protractor and sector 'G. Adams London', polished rayskin covered etui with white metal edging to lid and white metal hinge, instruments include: small dividers, medium dividers (fixed), large compass with interchangeable divider, star wheel, pen, pencil holder, small pen compas, pen, pencil holder, adjusting tool parallel protractor with scissor action engraved to front & back, and a brass sector, case 19cm tall

George Adams Senior (c.1709–1773): Instrument Maker to the King

George Adams Senior was one of the most influential English instrument makers of the 18th century, renowned for his precision craftsmanship and clear, accessible scientific writings. Establishing his business in Fleet Street, London, Adams produced a wide range of instruments including microscopes, telescopes, globes, drawing instruments and orreries, catering to the expanding interests of both scientific amateurs and professionals during the Enlightenment.

Adams gained particular distinction as Mathematical Instrument Maker to His Majesty, supplying scientific apparatus to King George III. This royal patronage not only signified high quality but also placed Adams at the forefront of British instrument making. His instruments were used in both educational and experimental settings, and he was instrumental in popularising science through his widely read books.

Adams’ business was carried on by his sons, especially George Adams Junior, who continued the business and the royal connection.
