Jacob Hendricus Maris (1837-1899) was a Dutch painter known for his landscapes, seascapes, and genre scenes. He was born in The Hague, Netherlands and studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and in Antwerp, Belgium. Maris was greatly influenced by the Hague School, a group of artists who painted realistic and atmospheric landscapes.
Maris' paintings are characterized by their soft, luminous tones and loose brushwork. He often depicted everyday scenes of Dutch life, such as fishermen on the beach, peasants in the fields, and boats on the canals. His work was highly regarded during his lifetime and was exhibited throughout Europe, including at the Paris Salon and the Royal Academy in London.
