PRITCHARD, Andrew, Micrographia, With Provenance

micrographia containing practical essays on Reflecting, Solar Oxy-Hydrogen Gas microscopes, micrometres eye-pieces etc, first edition, c.1837, half calf with marbled boards, with book plate for Edward Joshua Cooper, Markree Castle Note: Cooper, Edward Joshua (May 1798 – 23 April 1863) was an Irish landowner, politician and astronomer. He sat in the House of Commons in the UK from 1830 to 1841 and from 1857 to 1859, but is best known for his astronomy, and as the creator of Markree Observatory in his home county of Sligo, Ireland. This observatory was built by Cooper at Markree Castle after inheriting the castle from his father in 1830. It was said to be the most richly furnished private observatory at the time. He travelled widely with portable instruments, which he used to calculate the latitudes and longitudes of the places visited and assess their potential for astronomical observation. He accumulated a mass of geographical data, which he never published.
