His father, Colonel John Staunton Rochfort of Clogrenane in Ireland, came from this esteemed lineage, and his mother, Mary Burgh of Co. Kildare Downes, was his father's second wife. John Downes Rochfort inherited two ancestral estates in Ireland and also possessed a villa in Monte Carlo, along with residences in the prestigious locations of the Boltons, Kensington, and Eaton Place.

A passionate traveler, John Downes Rochfort's extensive journeys are well-documented in the John Downes Rochfort Albums collection. Beyond his love for exploration, he was an avid collector and a skilled artist, particularly known for his watercolors and ceramic works.
